Graduation dress – how to choose the right dress for graduation, winter or summer

A graduation dress needs to accomplish two things at once: look right at the ceremony, where you stand next to family and are being photographed, and then transition to the dinner and party afterwards without you needing to change. It must also suit the season – a graduation in January and one in June set completely different requirements for sleeves, material, and what you wear over it.

In this guide, we go through what is expected at a graduation, how to choose a graduation dress for winter versus summer, which length, color, and material work, how to style the dress from ceremony to party, and what to keep in mind if it is a high school graduation rather than a university one. At the end, you will find our current favorites.

What is expected at a graduation?

A graduation ceremony is festive but not dressed up in the same way as a wedding. Think "smart but daytime": a midi- or knee-length dress, well-groomed and without too much glitter, is almost always right. Floor-length evening gowns are better suited for the graduation ball or an evening dinner than for the ceremony itself.

If you are wearing a gown or receiving a diploma, it is your face, neck, and shoulders that will be visible in the photos – therefore, focus your attention on the neckline, sleeves, and color rather than the skirt. If it is a graduation party with a dress code on the invitation, you can find out what the different codes mean in our guide on dress codes.

Graduation dress in winter

Many university graduations are celebrated in January, and the dress must work in the cold, the dark, and the indoor heat all at once. The best choice is a long-sleeved dress in a fabric with some weight – satin, crêpe, or a densely knit fabric. It looks elegant without you freezing on the way in, and long sleeves mean you don't need a cardigan over it.

In terms of color, deep tones win in the winter: black, burgundy, dark green, navy blue, and champagne. A dress like our satin dress with a high neck and draped silhouette is almost tailor-made for a winter graduation – high neck, long sleeves, and a fabric that catches the light in photos. If you want more drama for a graduation ball, a long-sleeved lace dress like our long-sleeved red lace party dress works well.

Over the dress: a full-length coat, not a short jacket. We go through which coats work in the guide on coat with a dress, and more winter models in the guide on winter dresses.

Graduation dress in summer – and for high school graduation

A graduation in May or June gives you free rein: sleeveless, light colors, lighter fabrics. A midi dress with a defined waist in satin, lace, or a light woven fabric works both at the outdoor ceremony and at the dinner afterwards.

If you are graduating from high school, there is a specific tradition: the white graduation dress. It should be white or off-white, preferably not too short, and without a deep neckline – it is a garment that needs to work in church, in the schoolyard, and on the parade float. A model like our maxi dress with a mock neck in white provides the classic graduation look with a modern detail. For a university graduation in the summer, however, you do not have to choose white at all – in that case, a floral or colorful dress is just as appropriate, like our floral party dress with a v-neck.

More sleeveless models, and what to wear over them when the evening gets cool, can be found in the guide on what to wear over a sleeveless dress.

Length, color, and materials that work

  • Length: midi is the safest graduation length – festive, easy to walk in, and right for photos. Knee-length works during the day; save floor-length for the ball and dinner. Unsure of the difference? Read the guide on dress lengths.
  • Color: deep tones in winter, light and bright in summer. Black always works but can feel heavy in the middle of the day – a black dress with a light coat or light jewelry solves that.
  • Material: satin photographs beautifully and works year-round. Lace provides a festive feel. Knit is warm and comfortable in winter. We go through the pros and cons of satin in the guide on satin dresses.
  • Sleeves: long in winter, short or sleeveless in summer. A three-quarter sleeve is an elegant middle ground and works for a graduation in March or September.

Which model flatters your figure – A-line, wrap, corset bodice, or straight – we go through in the guide on which dress fits your body shape.

How to style the graduation dress

Keep the styling simple and let the dress stand out. A few rules that work:

  • Shoes you can walk in. A graduation involves stairs, lawns, and many hours on your feet. A block heel or a low heel is wiser than a stiletto.
  • One statement piece of jewelry, not three. Earrings that are visible in photos, or a necklace – not both.
  • A small bag. You will be holding a diploma, flowers, and a glass. A clutch or a small shoulder bag is enough.
  • Hair away from your face if you are wearing a hat or cap during the ceremony – it looks better in photos when it is removed.

If you want something over the dress indoors, a blazer is the most elegant choice – drape it over your shoulders for the photos and take it off for dinner. More in the guide on blazer over a dress.

From ceremony to dinner and party

The smartest thing about a graduation dress is choosing one that lasts all day. The trick is to change a couple of details rather than the entire outfit: switch the comfortable shoes for a pair with a higher heel, add an extra piece of jewelry, let your hair down, and take off the blazer. A dress with some luster – satin or a fabric with a shimmer – goes from daytime to evening without looking too dressed up in the afternoon.

If there is a graduation ball or a sit-down dinner in the evening, however, you can go straight for the party dress: a floor-length model like our black floor-length halterneck dress or a midi with ruffles like our A-line midi dress with ruffles. You can find more party models in the guide on party dresses.

Frequently asked questions

What should you wear to a graduation?

A dress in midi- or knee-length, smart but not ball-gown style. Long sleeves and deep colors in winter, sleeveless and lighter colors in summer. Save the floor-length for the ball.

Can you wear a black dress to graduation?

Yes. Black is elegant and works particularly well in winter. At a summer graduation in the middle of the day, a lighter color might feel more festive, but black is never wrong.

Do you have to wear a white dress for high school graduation?

White is the tradition for high school graduation in Sweden and what most people choose, but it is not a rule. Off-white, cream, and light pastels also work. For a university graduation, there is no expectation of white at all.

How long should a graduation dress be?

Midi is the safest length – it is festive, comfortable, and right in photos. Knee-length works during the day, and floor-length for the ball and dinner.

What do you wear over the dress for a winter graduation?

A full-length coat on the way there and a blazer over your shoulders indoors. Avoid short jackets – they break the line of the dress.

Can you wear the same dress for the ceremony and the party?

Yes, that is the smartest choice. Choose a midi with some luster and change your shoes, jewelry, and hairstyle for the evening instead of your entire outfit.

Summary

The best graduation dress is a midi in a fabric with luster that handles both the ceremony and the party. In winter, choose long sleeves and deep colors; in summer, sleeveless and light colors. High school graduation has its own rule – white – but for a university graduation, you choose the color that makes you happiest. Keep the styling simple, choose shoes you can walk in, and just change the details for the evening.
