Kvinna i knälång midiklänning och ljus kavaj på väg till en tillställning med klädkod kavaj

Dress code lounge suit for women – how to dress correctly (without a floor-length gown)

If the invitation says dress code: jacket (kavaj), it is easy to assume that you should wear a blazer – but that is not the case. "Kavaj" is one of Sweden's most common dress codes, and for a woman, it means a dressed-up but not formal look: a nicer dress just below or above the knee, a skirt with a dressy blouse, or a jumpsuit in a beautiful material.

In this guide, we will go through what the "kavaj" dress code actually means, exactly what you can wear, what length and material apply, how to wear a blazer over a dress, what is appropriate for a wedding – and how to choose colors, shoes, and accessories. At the bottom, you will find our favorites and answers to the most common questions.

What does the dress code "kavaj" mean?

"Kavaj" is the second most formal dress code after "mörk kostym" (dark suit) and tuxedo. The name comes from the men's side – where it means a suit with a shirt, preferably a tie – but the dress code obviously applies to everyone and really only says one thing: this is an occasion where you should be dressed up, but not in a floor-length gown.

The "kavaj" dress code is most often used for events that start earlier in the day: baptisms, confirmations, graduation dinners, anniversaries, kick-offs, and weddings that are not of the most formal kind. If you see mörk kostym on the invitation instead, the level has been raised one step, making longer dresses and darker tones appropriate.

The most common misconception is precisely that "kavaj" would mean that you have to wear a blazer (kavaj) as a garment. You don't have to – but it isn't wrong either, and further down we will go through how to do it stylishly.

How to dress as a woman

You have four options that are all completely right for a "kavaj" event:

  • Dress – the easiest and most common choice. A midi dress with a defined waist is almost always right.
  • Skirt and blouse – a dressy blouse in silk, satin, or crepe with a skirt of the same dressy level.
  • Jumpsuit – a blazer and trouser set is an elegant and comfortable alternative that lasts all evening.
  • Dress trousers with a nice top – well-pressed trousers and something with a bit of luster on top.

What determines whether the look lands right is rarely the garment itself, but the material and the fit. A simple dress in a fabric that drapes well looks more dressed up than a highly detailed dress in thin jersey. If you are unsure about how dressed up you should be, read our guide to dress codes at weddings.

Length and material

Length is the factor that most often goes wrong. The rule of thumb for "kavaj" is simple:

  • Knee-length or just below the knee – the safest and always right.
  • Midi – calf-length works excellently and feels modern.
  • Floor-length dress – becomes too formal. Save it for "mörk kostym" or evening gown codes.
  • Short and tight – belongs at a party without a dress code, not here.

Unsure about what counts as what? We have gone through the difference between mini, midi, and maxi in its own guide.

When it comes to material, you benefit from fabrics that hold their shape: crepe, satin, thicker viscose, fine-quality wool, or lace over a lining. Avoid thin jersey, linen that wrinkles immediately, and anything that looks everyday in daylight – "kavaj" events often start when the sun is still up, and daylight is unforgiving to cheap fabrics.

Blazer over the dress

Here comes the second meaning of the word: actually wearing a blazer over the dress. It is one of the most useful tricks in the wardrobe, as it makes a summery dress wearable in autumn and a simple dress significantly more dressed up.

Three things determine if it looks well-thought-out:

  • The blazer should end above the narrowest part of the dress – a short, fitted slim-fit blazer maintains the waist. A long, oversized blazer hides it.
  • Stick to two colors in total – blazer and dress in the same color family, or a clear contrast. Never three shades that almost match.
  • Never button it up completely – an open blazer creates a vertical line that elongates. If you want to accentuate the waist, do it with a narrow belt instead.

A single-breasted blazer in a neutral tone is the most useful one you can own – it works over a dress, with a skirt, and with trousers. You can find more models and fits in our guide to women's blazers.

Dress code "kavaj" at weddings

"Kavaj" at a wedding usually means a wedding ceremony earlier in the day and a dinner that does not require a floor-length gown. As a guest, knee-length or midi is right, and you are welcome to choose a happier color than you would have for an evening wedding.

Two rules apply regardless of the dress code: avoid white, and avoid accidentally matching the bridesmaids. Black is now accepted at most Swedish weddings – we have written more about this in the guide on wearing a black dress to a wedding – but at a light daytime wedding, it often feels unnecessarily heavy. If you are unsure about the color choice, start with our review of which color to choose for a wedding.

Bring a layer. "Kavaj" weddings almost always involve mingling outdoors, and a blazer or a nice cardigan over your shoulders will save the evening when the temperature drops. Femina has a good overview of how the dress codes differ for wedding guests.

Color, shoes, and accessories

The color controls how formal the look is perceived. Darker tones read as more formal, while light and bright colors read as more daytime and summer-appropriate. For a "kavaj" event, you have more freedom than with "mörk kostym" – but stick to a clear color rather than a messy pattern.

As for shoes: a heel of three to seven centimeters is the safest level. Completely flat ballerinas can dress down the look, and a very high stiletto is usually more than the dress code requires. In autumn, an elegant boot works perfectly with a midi dress.

Keep accessories few and clear: a small bag, a pair of earrings, possibly a narrow belt. ELLE goes through the entire dress code ladder if you want to compare the levels.

Occasion Model to choose Keep in mind
Baptism and confirmation Knee-length dress in a light or muted color The church is cool – bring a blazer or cardigan
Wedding daytime Midi dress in a happier color Never white, and check the bridesmaids' color
Graduation dinner or anniversary Jumpsuit or skirt with a dressy blouse Comfortable shoes – it will be a long evening
Kick-off or company party Blazer over a simple dress Keep it slightly more toned down than privately
Autumn and winter Midi dress with boots and blazer Darker tones and heavier fabrics

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to wear a blazer if the dress code is "kavaj"?

No. The dress code refers to the level, not the garment. A nicer dress, a skirt with a dressy blouse, or a jumpsuit fulfills the dress code perfectly without a blazer.

Can you wear a floor-length dress for the "kavaj" dress code?

No, a floor-length dress is considered too dressed up for "kavaj". Knee-length or midi is the right level. Floor-length dresses belong to "mörk kostym", "frack" (white tie), and tuxedo.

Can you wear trousers for the "kavaj" dress code?

Yes, absolutely. A jumpsuit or well-cut suit trousers with a nice top is perfectly correct and often the most comfortable choice for a long evening.

What is the difference between "kavaj" and "mörk kostym"?

"Mörk kostym" is one step more formal and is usually used in the evening. There, darker colors and longer dresses are correct, whereas "kavaj" allows for knee-length, midi, and lighter tones.

Can you wear black for the "kavaj" dress code?

Yes. Black is fully accepted, especially in the evening. For a light daytime event, however, it can feel heavy – in that case, choose a muted color like navy blue, moss green, or burgundy instead.

What shoes suit the "kavaj" dress code?

A heel of three to seven centimeters is the safest level. In autumn, an elegant boot works just as well with a midi dress, and a nice loafer goes with a jumpsuit.

Summary

The "kavaj" dress code means dressed up but not formal – and it is in the interpretation of that which most people stumble. Four garments all work equally well, one very common choice makes you too dressed up, and two details determine if the look lands: how the fabric drapes and how many tones you stick to. The guide above goes through what those are, occasion by occasion.

If the invitation is one step above "kavaj", the answer is not a longer dress, but a well-cut suit. The difference lies in the fabric and the cut of the shoulder – we go through it in the guide on suits for women.

"Kavaj" is the dress code people google most often, but the hardest one to dress correctly for is another: what to wear to a funeral. The rules there are softer than most people think, and knowing that in advance makes an already difficult day a little easier.

"Kavaj" is a dress code for parties, but the reasoning about length, fabric, and coverage applies just as much to the office. This is how you choose a dress for work.
