What is a puffer jacket? The difference between a down jacket and a padded jacket – simply explained

A puffer jacket is a padded jacket where the filling is held in stitched channels, giving the jacket its typical "puffy" surface. The name thus describes the shape – not what the jacket is filled with. This is why a puffer jacket can be a down jacket, but does not have to be.

In this guide, we walk you through what counts as a puffer jacket, how it differs from a down jacket, a quilted jacket, and a padded jacket, what it is filled with, how warm it actually is, and what models are available – plus our current favorites.

What is a puffer jacket?

A puffer jacket is a jacket with a thin outer fabric, a lining, and filling in between. The filling is held in place by seams that divide the jacket into channels – usually horizontal, sometimes in squares. The filling bulges out between the seams, and it is this bulging surface that has given the jacket its name: from the English word "puff".

The point of the design is air. The filling traps still air, and it is this air that provides insulation. The channels ensure that the filling does not slide down towards the hem, so that the jacket provides equal warmth over the chest as over the hips. The outer fabric is almost always nylon or polyester – light, windproof, and often water-repellent.

Puffer jacket, down jacket, or padded jacket – what is the difference?

Puffer jacket describes the shape, down jacket describes the filling. A down jacket is a puffer jacket filled with down. A puffer jacket filled with synthetic fiber is still a puffer jacket, but not a down jacket. If you want to read more about down specifically, we have our own guide for women's down jackets.

Täckjacka (padded/quilted jacket) is the older Swedish word for the same thing: a padded, stitched jacket. Today, "täckjacka" is usually used for thinner and flatter models, while "puffer jacket" is used for thicker ones with clear, round channels. There is no sharp boundary – many stores use the words interchangeably.

Quilted jacket is the closest relative. It also has stitched patterns, but the padding is thin and the jacket lies flat against the body. A quilted jacket is an autumn garment; a puffer jacket is built for the cold. More about that in the guide women's quilted jacket, and about the words "lined" and "padded" in lined or padded jacket.

What is a puffer jacket filled with?

There are two types of filling, and they behave differently:

  • Down – the soft under-feathers from ducks or geese. Warmest per gram and can be compressed to almost nothing. The downside is moisture: wet down clumps together and stops insulating until it has dried.
  • Synthetic filling – polyester fibers that mimic down. Weighs a bit more for the same warmth, but retains a large portion of its insulation even when damp, dries quickly, and handles machine washing better.

The label often says "padding" or just "100% polyester" – in that case, the filling is synthetic. If it says down, it is normally stated as a percentage, for example, 90% down and 10% feathers. In Swedish winter weather, where it is often wet rather than truly cold, synthetic is a more forgiving choice for everyday use.

How warm is a puffer jacket?

Warmth depends on three things: how much filling the jacket has, how long it is, and how tight it is at the openings. How thick the jacket looks says less than you might think.

A thin puffer jacket with narrow channels is a mid-layer or an autumn jacket. A thick one with wide channels is a winter jacket. At every seam, the filling is compressed, so a jacket with many narrow channels is usually cooler than one with a few wide ones. A hood, a high collar, and cuffs at the sleeves do more for warmth than additional volume.

Common models

  • Lightweight puffer jacket – thin, with narrow channels and low weight. Works alone in the autumn and as a layer under a coat in winter, like this lightweight down jacket with hood.
  • Cropped puffer – ends at the waist. Stylish with high-waisted trousers and dresses, but leaves the lower back unprotected. One example is our cropped down jacket with hood.
  • Oversized puffer – straight, spacious, and hip-length with room for a thick sweater underneath.
  • Long puffer – reaches the thigh or calf and is the warmest, as it covers the parts that get cold first when you are standing still. See for example the insulated winter jacket in puffer design.

When is a puffer jacket suitable?

The puffer jacket is at its best in dry cold: it is light, warm immediately, and takes up little space in a bag. Therefore, it is also a great travel jacket. In persistent rain, it is less effective – the outer fabric is usually water-repellent, not waterproof, and the seams eventually let water through.

If the autumn where you live is mostly windy and wet, a parka with denser outer fabric often does a better job, see women's parka. If you want advice on length, fit, styling, and washing the puffer itself, it is all in our buying guide women's puffer jacket.

Frequently asked questions

What is a puffer jacket?

A puffer jacket is a padded jacket where the filling is in stitched channels, which gives it a puffy surface. It can be filled with down or synthetic fiber.

Are a puffer jacket and a down jacket the same thing?

Not exactly. Puffer jacket describes the shape, and down jacket describes the filling. All down jackets are puffers, but a puffer with synthetic filling is not a down jacket.

What is the difference between a puffer jacket and a padded jacket ("täckjacka")?

In practice, none. "Täckjacka" is the older Swedish word for a padded, stitched jacket. Today, it is mostly used for thinner models, while puffer jacket is used for the thicker ones.

Why is it called a puffer jacket?

The name comes from the English word "puff." The filling bulges out between the seams, making the jacket look inflated or "puffy."

Is a puffer jacket a winter jacket?

That depends on the thickness. A thin puffer is an autumn jacket or a mid-layer; a thick one with wide channels and a hood can handle a Swedish winter.

Does a puffer jacket withstand rain?

A light rain, yes – the outer fabric is usually water-repellent. In persistent rain, it eventually gets wet, and if it is filled with down, it stops insulating until it has dried.

Summary

A puffer jacket is a padded jacket with the filling in stitched channels. The word describes the shape: if it is filled with down, it is also a down jacket, and "täckjacka" is simply the older Swedish word for the same garment. Choose thickness and length based on when you are going to use it, and filling based on the weather – down for dry cold, synthetic for wet winter days.
